Essential Listening

Updated: 21/Feb/12

Over the past few months I’ve become a little obsessed with podcasts. Not just any podcasts, but developer podcasts. It hasn’t been easy finding them as they seem to be few and far between, which is why I thought I’d share my playlist here.

Hanselminutes
Scott Hanselman interviews a different guest each week from different corners of the programming landscape. Scott’s talent for asking the right questions makes this the most educational on my list, and top of the MSDN Flash Poll.

Yet Another Podcast
Jesse Liberty, a Senior Developer-Community Evangelist on the Windows Phone Team presents a weekly interview style podcast on a wide variety of technical topics.

Pluralcast (Discontinued)
The official pluralsight podcast, each fortnight David Starr hosts a show with stories, interviews and tips for visual studio. You don’t need a pluralsight subscription to listen.

This Developer’s Life
Scott Hanselman and Rob Conery co-host, looking at the human stories of what it means to be a developer. Each show features interviews from contributors all based around a common theme such as handling criticism, competition and dealing with obsession.

Herding Code
Interviews and frank discussions from hosts K. Scott Allen, Kevin Dente, Scott Koon and Jon Galloway on a variety of tech subjects.

I was surprised to see the results of a recent MSDN Flash Poll which had some developers listing their favourite as “I don’t have time for podcasts”. Personally, I listen to mine in the car on the way to work, it turns a dull commute into an opportunity to hear what other developers are up to, or even learn how some new tech works.

Happy listening.
